About this view
From a hotel above the beach of Venere Azzurra, this live cam takes in the whole bay of Lerici: the sand and its umbrellas below, the boats at anchor, and the castle on its promontory, built by the Pisans in the 13th century and enlarged by Genoa, standing over the old town. Beyond it is the open Gulf of La Spezia, which the Italians call the Golfo dei Poeti.
The name comes from the poets who lived here: Shelley sailed from the bay in 1822 and never came back, and Byron swam across it. Today the traffic is bathers by day, fishing boats and yachts in the evening, and in high summer the ferries to the Cinque Terre and Portovenere that leave from the harbour under the castle.
Lerici keeps Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer. The beach clubs run from May to September, and the light on the castle is best in the late afternoon; in winter the umbrellas are gone, the water turns dark blue and the view belongs to the fishermen.
