A live webcam on Castronuovo di Sant'Andrea, a village of some 850 people clinging to the slopes of Monte Manca at 650 metres, in the middle valley of the Sinni in Basilicata. This is the Italy that the guidebooks skip: stone houses stacked up a hillside, a valley of calanchi, the eroded clay badlands of the south, and the Pollino massif on the horizon.
Not much moves, and that is the point. Church bells, the occasional car on the road up from the valley, washing on the lines, swallows in summer and cloud in the valley in the mornings; a village that has been losing people for a century and has kept its shape.
Morning light comes over the valley, evening light hits the houses (UTC+1, +2 in summer). Summer brings emigrants home for the August feast days and the village briefly doubles; winter can bring snow to the hilltop.
