About this view
The basin of San Marco is Venice's grand harbour front, where the Grand Canal opens toward the lagoon between the Doge's Palace and Palladio's San Giorgio Maggiore across the water. Every arrival to Venice by sea makes this entrance.
The view runs deep: gondolas bobbing at their moorings in the foreground, vaporetti crossing to the Lido, sailboats and the odd tall ship, with San Giorgio's campanile holding the horizon. In autumn's acqua alta the quaysides themselves sometimes join the lagoon.
Sunrise on the live webcam over the basin (7–8 am Italian time) is one of the finest openings a morning can have; regatta days, especially September's Regata Storica, fill the water with rowing crews in Renaissance dress.
