Tre Cime di Lavaredo from Rifugio Locatelli
The north faces of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, seen from Rifugio Locatelli on a live webcam in the Dolomites.
About this view
Rifugio Locatelli, the Dreizinnenhütte to German speakers, stands at about 2,400 metres opposite the north faces of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and this live cam gives the classic view from the hut: three limestone towers side by side, the highest of them, Cima Grande, reaching 2,999 metres.
The north faces drop some 500 metres sheer, and they have been test pieces of climbing since Emilio Comici's ascent of Cima Grande in 1933. The ground in front of them was the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary in the First World War, and tunnels and trenches from that war still cut through the rock around the hut. On summer days the path from the Auronzo hut brings thousands of walkers round the base of the towers.
The Dolomites keep Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer. The hut opens from late June to late September, and in the evening the towers turn orange and red, the alpenglow the Ladin valleys call enrosadira.
