About this view
Eight kilometres from the crater, on the southeastern flank of the volcano in the state of Puebla, the village of San Pedro Benito Juárez keeps this live cam pointed up at Popocatépetl. At 5,426 metres it is the second highest peak in Mexico and one of the most closely watched volcanoes on Earth: roughly 25 million people live within 100 kilometres of it, Mexico City and Puebla among them.
Most days it breathes: a plume of steam and gas leaning with the wind off the summit. Then come the exhalations and explosions, ash columns climbing kilometres above the crater, incandescent rock on the slopes at night, and the ashfall that closes the Mexico City airport a few times a year, as it did in May 2023.
