About this view
An underwater live cam fixed some 100 metres off the south shore of Utila, six metres down in a sandy channel that leads out to a reef wall dropping nearly 40 metres to the sea floor. Utila is the smallest of Honduras's Bay Islands, and this reef is part of the Mesoamerican system, the largest barrier reef in the Atlantic.
The channel works as a corridor, which is why it was chosen: eagle rays and stingrays cruise through, morays hunt along the edge, turtles and the occasional shark pass on their way to the wall, and snappers and groupers hang in the current. Some hours are empty blue; then something large drifts in.
Daylight is everything underwater — the picture runs roughly 6 am to 6 pm local (UTC−6, no daylight saving) and goes dark at night. Visibility is best in the drier months, from about February to May. Utila is also one of the world's reliable places to meet whale sharks, though the camera is too shallow for them.
