Riet Vell Lagoon, Ebro Delta
The Riet Vell lagoon in the Ebro delta and the waterbirds that feed in it, on a live webcam in Catalonia.
About this view
Riet Vell is a small nature reserve in the Ebro delta, near Amposta in southern Catalonia, and this live cam watches its lagoon, counted among the best places in the whole delta to watch birds at close range.
The reserve was set up to prove a point: around the lagoon, its rice fields are farmed organically, to show that the delta's main crop and its birds can share the same ground. The delta as a whole, some 320 square kilometres of rice paddies, lagoons, dunes and salt marsh at the mouth of the longest river entirely within Spain, is one of the most important wetlands in the western Mediterranean. More than 300 species of birds have been recorded there, from greater flamingos to purple herons, avocets and great flocks of wintering ducks.
The delta keeps Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer. Spring and autumn bring the migrants through and winter the ducks, while the rice fields change the scene through the year: flooded in spring, green in summer and gold before the September harvest.
