Plaça del Mercadal, Reus
The main square of Reus, Gaudí's home town in Catalonia, on a live webcam from the city hall balcony.
About this view
Reus is where Antoni Gaudí was born in 1852, and this live cam looks out from the Ajuntament, the city hall, over the Plaça del Mercadal, the square that has been the town's market and meeting place since the Middle Ages. The bell tower on the left belongs to the Prioral de Sant Pere, the church where Gaudí was baptised; the modern glass tower across the square is the Gaudí Centre.
The terraces under the arcades fill from mid morning and stay full until late, and the square is the finish line of every fiesta in a town that takes them seriously: the giants and the fire runs of Sant Pere in late June, and the Misericòrdia festival in September, all end up here.
Reus keeps Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer. The light is on the façades from noon, and a summer evening runs late by northern standards, with the terraces still busy at 23:00; Tarragona and its Roman ruins are a quarter of an hour away by train.
