The Sanctuary's own webcam holds the Grotto of Massabielle in frame around the clock: the cave where fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous reported eighteen apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1858. Some six million pilgrims a year make this one of the world's most visited Marian shrines.
The rhythm is liturgical: Masses and rosaries at the Grotto through the day, pilgrims filing past to touch the rock, candles massed on their tiered stands beneath the statue in the niche. Seventy-two healings at Lourdes have been officially recognised by the Church as miraculous.
Pilgrimage season runs April to November: at 9 pm local time (UTC+1, +2 in summer) the torchlight Marian procession sets off from the Grotto, and the evening view fills with candlelight. On 11 February the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes marks the anniversary of the first apparition.
