Duomo di Orvieto
Orvieto's cathedral and its Gothic façade from above the piazza, on a live webcam in the heart of Umbria.
About this view
The Duomo di Orvieto fills this live cam from across its piazza: the striped flanks of basalt and travertine, and the Gothic façade begun in 1290 and worked on for three centuries, whose gilded mosaics catch the sun full on in the afternoon. The town stands on a cliff of volcanic tuff above the Umbrian plain, and the cathedral is the one building that rises clear of its roofs.
The square is busiest late morning and again before dinner, when visitors up from Rome, about an hour away by train, fill the steps and the café tables along the edge. Locals cross it as a shortcut. In June the feast of Corpus Domini, proclaimed in Orvieto in 1264, brings the town's historical procession past the doors.
Orvieto keeps Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer. The façade faces west, so the mosaics burn brightest in the last two hours before sunset, and the floodlights come on at dusk; from October to March the piazza is quiet and the town takes it back.
