About this view
This live cam looks across the central square of Val di Luce, the highest of the valleys of the Abetone ski area, on the Tuscan side of the Apennines north of Pistoia. The stone-and-timber blocks around the square hold the apartments and shops of a resort built for the snow, at about 1,500 metres, with the ridge of Monte Gomito closing the view above.
From December to March the square is the meeting point of the ski area: skiers walking to the lifts in the morning, sledges and hot chocolate in the afternoon, and the après-ski on the terraces. In summer the same square is a car park for walkers heading up to the ridge, and quiet enough to hear the cowbells.
Abetone keeps Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer. Fresh snow shows best in the first hour of daylight, before the pistes are tracked; midweek outside the holidays the valley is nearly empty, and from April to November the resort sleeps.
