About this view

Piazza Saint Bon is a historic square in La Spezia, about a hundred metres from the central railway station, and this live cam watches it from the Hotel Venezia on its edge.

The square is named after Simone Pacoret de Saint-Bon, the admiral and naval minister of the newly united Italy, and it is the main gateway from the station into the old centre. In the foreground sits a roundabout with a marble monument at its centre, the Obelisco by the local artist Francesco Vaccarone. Around it, the square is a working piece of the city: buses and scooters, travellers wheeling cases towards the station, and the shutters of the shops going up and down with the Italian day.

La Spezia keeps Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer. With some 93,000 people it is Liguria's second town after Genoa, and its port at the head of the gulf is both a naval base and the gateway to the Cinque Terre, whose trains leave from the station behind the square.
