Main Street in Madison, Indiana, a small Ohio River town with an unusual claim: its historic district covers 133 blocks and is a National Historic Landmark in its entirety, one of the largest in the United States. What you are looking at is a 19th-century American main street that never got modernised, because the boom simply moved on and left it standing.
The pace is the point. Pick-ups and the occasional delivery van pass the storefronts, people cross without waiting for a gap, and the shopfronts light up one by one as the afternoon goes. It is the opposite of every other city camera we carry, and after twenty minutes of Times Square it is oddly restorative.
Indiana runs on Eastern time here. Autumn is the season, the Ohio valley turns and the light gets long, while the Fourth of July and the Madison Regatta in July fill the streets and put hydroplanes on the river. Otherwise this 24/7 live cam is small-town America, ticking over.
