LifeSport Vernon Hills, Pickleball Court 2

Rallies, dinks and league play on a live webcam over Court 2 of a pickleball club in Vernon Hills.

About this view

Court 2 is one of the five indoor courts of the LifeSport pickleball club at Vernon Hills, in the northern suburbs of Chicago, and this live cam watches it. The court is the regulation twenty feet by forty-four, the size of a badminton court, with a net 34 inches high at the centre.

Pickleball began in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, as a family game improvised in a backyard, and it has since become one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. Its rhythm is its own: an underhand serve, a no-volley zone of seven feet on each side of the net that players call the kitchen, and long exchanges of soft shots, the dinks, until someone speeds the ball up and the point is over in a second.

Vernon Hills keeps Central Time, UTC−6, UTC−5 in summer. The club's five courts are indoors and cushioned, so play runs all year on reservation, whatever the Illinois weather is doing outside.
