Snowman Cam, Gaylord

Northern Michigan's alpine town on a live webcam, its grazing animals and one very patient snowman.

About this view

Gaylord bills itself as Michigan's Alpine Village, complete with Swiss-styled storefronts and a Bavarian festival, Alpenfest, in the third week of July. This live webcam points at the town's long-running Snowman Cam, a fixture people drive out of their way to wave at.

The snowman is the excuse; the yard is the reason to stay. Animals graze through the frame, and visitors turn up to pose in front of the camera. This is elk country: the city keeps a herd viewable at Elk View Park, and the nearby Pigeon River Country State Forest holds one of the largest free-ranging elk herds east of the Mississippi.

Winter is the obvious season: northern Michigan gets buried, and the snow here is the point. Autumn brings the elk rut and the hardwood colour, which is the other time this corner of the state is at its best.
