Gaylord, high on the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, has dressed itself as an Alpine Village since the 1960s, and the live webcams in Gaylord show the countryside the theme borrows from: snowy paddocks of grazing animals on the edge of town, a landmark snowman among them, with the snow itself the main attraction from December onwards. Gaylord keeps Eastern Time, UTC−5 and UTC−4 in summer, so the short winter afternoons fall around a European evening and the animals are out through what is a British night. The town lies in some of the deepest snow country in the state, averaging around 150 inches a year, and the surrounding forest holds Michigan's elk herd, more than a thousand animals. December to March for snow; September and October for the elk rut, when the bulls bugle in the Pigeon River country.
