Union Pacific at Dexter, Missouri

Union Pacific freights through Dexter in south-east Missouri, on a live webcam that viewers can steer.

About this view

This live cam stands beside the Union Pacific main line in Dexter, a town of some 8,000 people in Stoddard County, in the south-east corner of Missouri, at milepost 141.2 of the railroad's Hoxie Subdivision.

Dexter was born with the railroad: its first map was filed in 1873 by Thomas Allen, president of the Cairo, Arkansas and Texas Railroad, and the tracks have run through the middle of town ever since. Today the traffic is long freight trains of every kind, rolling between the Midwest and the South. The camera pans, tilts and zooms on commands typed by viewers, so the frame can swing from an approaching headlight to the crossing gates and back again as a train goes by.

Dexter keeps Central Time, UTC−6, UTC−5 in summer, so an evening train here passes in the European night. Trains run at all hours, and after dark the headlights and the crossing lights make the night one of the best times to watch.
