Dexter is a small city in Stoddard County, in the south-east corner of Missouri, and the live webcams in Dexter look at a railroad town that has stayed one: the tracks laid through it in the 1870s still carry long freight trains through the middle of town. Its first map was filed in 1873 by Thomas Allen, president of the Cairo, Arkansas and Texas Railroad, and Dexter grew up around the line, living on the railroad and on logging before manufacturing, health care and retail took over. Some 7,900 people live here. Dexter keeps Central Time, UTC−6, UTC−5 in summer, so its evenings fall in the European night; summers are hot and humid, and spring and autumn are the mild seasons.
