About this view
This is the world's first boardwalk, laid in 1870 to keep beach sand out of hotel lobbies and railway carriages, and still the spine of Atlantic City. The camera looks along the stretch between Tennessee and Pennsylvania Avenues, with Schiff's Central Pier Arcade on the right and the Atlantic past it.
It runs as a parade all day: joggers, families cutting through to the sand, the wicker chairs on wheels that visitors still hire to be pushed along the boards, and the arcade crowd spilling back out. Casino towers stand behind the camera, the ocean in front. The gulls take a professional interest in anyone carrying food.
Atlantic City runs on Eastern Time, UTC−5 and UTC−4 in summer. July and August fill the boards from morning until late; the shoulder months are quieter and the light is better. The summer airshow is the one day the beach itself disappears under people.
