Coney Island

New York's seaside playground on a live webcam: the Cyclone, the Wonder Wheel and a very long boardwalk.

About this view

Coney Island is not a theme park but a working Brooklyn neighbourhood that happens to have an amusement district on its beach. This live webcam watches the boardwalk and the rides behind it, the stretch that has been New York's seaside release valve for well over a century.

Two landmarks dominate the frame. Deno's Wonder Wheel has turned since 1920. The Cyclone, a wooden coaster that opened on 26 June 1927, drops 85 feet at a 60-degree pitch and hits 60 miles an hour, still one of the steepest wooden coasters anywhere, and still rattling.

Summer is obvious, but the calendar dates are better: the Mermaid Parade near the June solstice, the biggest arts parade in the country, and Nathan's hot dog eating contest every Fourth of July. Eastern time, UTC−5.
