High in the corner of a coconut stall at Agdao Public Market, this live cam looks down on the stock: pale, trimmed coconuts heaped on a counter, a basket of brown mature nuts in front, a weighing scale and steel machines on the shelves, and glass doors onto the market lane on the right. The Philippines is the second-largest coconut producer in the world, and a stall like this one is where that harvest reaches the kitchen.
Two kinds of coconut do two jobs in a Philippine kitchen. Young ones, buko, are opened for their water and soft flesh; mature ones, niyog, are grated and squeezed for gata, the coconut milk behind dishes like ginataang gulay. Through the doors, the lane carries on after dark, and the stall stays lit into the evening.
Davao keeps Philippine time, UTC+8, all year, so its evening falls in a European afternoon. The city covers 2,443 square kilometres, the largest in the Philippines by land area, and some 1.85 million people lived in it at the 2024 census, more than in any other city of Mindanao. In August, Kadayawan, Davao's harvest festival, fills the streets.
