About this view
Okaukuejo's waterhole sits below a viewing terrace at the oldest camp in Etosha, and this live cam holds it around the clock. The park protects some 22,000 square kilometres around a salt pan large enough to be picked out from orbit, and through the dry season every animal for miles has to come to water like this one.
The cast changes through the day: elephant herds that push everything else aside, giraffe splaying their legs to drink, oryx, springbok and zebra in constant nervous rotation, lions when they choose. The waterhole is floodlit after dark, which is when black rhino — critically endangered, and a Namibian stronghold — most often walk in.
May to October is the season, when the bush dries out and the traffic never stops (UTC+2, no daylight saving). Nights are the connoisseur's watch; the wet months scatter the animals and quieten the frame.
