About this view

This camera looks at an artificial waterhole on the Makgadikgadi salt pans, a landscape so flat and empty it reads as nothing at all until something walks into it. The pans are the destination of Botswana's zebra migration, when thousands of animals come south from the Okavango for the mineral-rich grass that appears after the rains.

Outside migration season the waterhole holds the frame on its own. Black-maned Kalahari lions are known here, along with cheetah, and the surrounding desert brings oryx, springbok and a long list of birds to the only reliable water for a great distance.

Botswana is UTC+2. The migration is a November-to-April event, following the rains; the dry months make the waterhole itself the main draw, with the heaviest traffic in the first and last hours of daylight.
