Tau Game Lodge, Madikwe
A waterhole in the reserve rebuilt from farmland by the largest game move ever staged.
About this view
Madikwe is a conservation experiment that worked. In 1991 the reserve was degraded farmland on the Botswana border; Operation Phoenix then moved more than 8,000 animals of some 28 species onto it, in what is generally described as the largest game translocation ever attempted. Everything in this frame descends from that.
The reserve now runs to about 75,000 hectares and holds the Big Five, and it sits high and dry enough to be malaria-free — unusual for a South African Big Five reserve, and the reason many families choose it. This camera watches the waterhole in front of Tau Game Lodge.
South Africa is UTC+2. The dry winter months from May to September concentrate the game at water; the reserve is also good for wild dog, which are easiest to see in the cooler hours.
