About this view

The Sabi Sand is 65,000 hectares of private reserve in Mpumalanga sharing an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, so the animals treat the two as one landscape. It is widely called Africa's leopard capital: generations of leopards here have grown up around vehicles and simply ignore them, which is why sightings are more reliable in this reserve than almost anywhere else.

This camera looks at the waterhole in front of Nkorho Bush Lodge. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, nyala and warthog come and go through the day; leopard, lion and hyena are the night shift, and the sound is often the first sign of either.

South Africa is UTC+2. The dry winter, from about May to September, is prime: the bush thins out, the grass drops, and animals come to water. Summer is greener, hotter and much harder to see into.
