Rosie's Pan
The classic wide waterhole view in Greater Kruger, open bush on every side.
About this view
Rosie's Pan is the wide shot: a pan in open Greater Kruger bush with clear ground around it, so animals are visible approaching and leaving rather than simply appearing. It is the counterpart to the close, low cameras elsewhere on the same reserve.
The pan works as a queue. Elephant arrive and take the water for as long as they want it; everything else waits at the treeline until they have finished. Impala, kudu, waterbuck, warthog and baboon fill the gaps through the day, and the pan keeps working after dark for hyena and the cats.
South Africa is UTC+2, which puts the productive late-afternoon hours in the European afternoon. Dry-season winter, May to September, is when the surrounding bush has nothing else to offer and this pan becomes the centre of the neighbourhood.
