Camp Kuzuma Waterhole

A permanent waterhole on the elephant corridor between Chobe and Hwange.

About this view

This waterhole sits directly in front of Camp Kuzuma, in the Kazuma Forest Reserve about 80 kilometres south of Kasane. It is permanent water in dry country, on the corridor elephants use to move between Chobe and Hwange — which is why the camera so often has something in it.

Elephants are the headline act, arriving in family groups to drink, spray and shove each other around the edge. The reserve also holds buffalo, giraffe, lion and leopard, and the camp's private concession runs to 20,000 hectares, so what walks into frame is genuinely wild rather than fed.

July to October is the season: the bush dries out, surface water disappears elsewhere, and animals concentrate on whatever is left. Botswana runs on UTC+2, so the productive first and last hours of light fall in the European morning and late afternoon.
