Elephant Pan, Hyena Pan
An elephant pan on the edge of the Okavango, in Botswana's Khwai country.
About this view
This pan sits in the Khwai region on the northeastern edge of the Okavango, between the delta's permanent water and the dry country beyond it. That position is why the camera works: animals moving between the two pass through, and the pan itself is reliable water when the seasonal channels are not.
Elephants give the pan its name and dominate the frame — bathing, drinking and shoving in family groups, sometimes for hours. Hyena are the other constant, and the surrounding mopane brings buffalo, kudu, and the lion and wild dog that follow the game.
Botswana is UTC+2. The dry season from June to October is peak, when the Okavango's flood is receding and the game concentrates hard around whatever water is left. Nights here are worth leaving open — much of the traffic is nocturnal.
