Fig Tree Crossing, Mara River
A Mara River crossing point, a live webcam watching around the clock through migration season.
About this view
The Mara River is the obstacle at the centre of the great migration, and this live cam watches one of its crossing points. Wildebeest gather on the bank in their thousands, hesitate, sometimes for hours, sometimes for a day, and then go, all at once, into water that holds some of the largest crocodiles in Africa.
Outside the crossing weeks the river is still the busiest address in the Mara. Hippos hold the deeper pools year-round, elephants come down to drink and bathe, and the banks bring a constant traffic of baboons, antelope and birds.
Kenya is UTC+3. The migration reaches the Mara around July and the herds move back toward the Serengeti from about October, so those months are when a crossing might happen in frame, with no schedule and no warning, which is the entire appeal.
