Deteema Springs Camp

A spring in Zimbabwe's largest park on a live webcam, where elephant herds come hundreds strong.

About this view

Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest national park, roughly 14,600 square kilometres in the country's west, and it holds one of the biggest elephant populations in Africa, a figure usually given as around 45,000 animals.

The park has almost no permanent surface water, which is the single fact that shapes everything you see here. Artificial waterholes have been pumped since the 1930s, and in the dry season the game has nowhere else to go: herds hundreds strong converge on individual pans, along with buffalo, and the predators that follow both.

Zimbabwe runs on UTC+2. The dry season, roughly July to October, is when this live webcam earns its keep: the bush thins, the heat builds, and everything in the park is funnelled toward water. The rains from November scatter the game again.
