Selati Bridge over the Sabie, Skukuza

The Sabie River below the Selati bridge at Skukuza, in the Kruger National Park, on a live webcam.

About this view

At Skukuza, the Kruger National Park's main camp, an old railway bridge crosses the Sabie River, and this live cam watches the river from it. The bridge carries the Kruger Shalati, a hotel of train carriages parked for good on the tracks, 24 suites in the style of the rail safaris of the 1920s.

The bridge is where the park began. The railway reached the Sabie here in the early 1900s, and James Stevenson-Hamilton, the first warden, set up his headquarters at the crossing, then called Sabi Bridge, in the camp that later took his Tsonga nickname, Skukuza. Below it the river runs all year, and a permanent river draws the whole park: hippos and crocodiles in the water, elephants and buffalo coming down to drink, herons and fish eagles on the banks.

The Kruger keeps South Africa Standard Time, UTC+2, all year. The dry winter months, from May to September, bring the most animals to the river, and the rains from November turn the bush green.
