The peregrine is the fastest animal alive: in a hunting stoop it has been clocked at over 300 km/h, faster than anything else that moves under its own power.
The current pair are known to the people who watch them — Diamond, the female, and Gimbir, the male, whose name means spring or fountain in Wiradjuri, the language of this country. The box shows everything: courtship, eggs, the shifts of incubation, and prey arriving, which is not always a pigeon.
The nesting season is the reason to watch, running through the southern spring from about September to December (UTC+10, +11 in summer). Outside it the box stands empty for long stretches, though the adults come and go from the tower year-round.
