Robbie's Tarpon Dock

Hand-feeding giant tarpon off a Florida Keys dock, with pelicans waiting at the rail for a miss.

About this view

Robbie's Marina has been feeding tarpon off this dock since the 1970s, after a hooked fish was nursed back to health here and never left. The camera looks straight down at the feeding platform: gin-clear water, a queue of people holding buckets of baitfish, and the silver shapes waiting underneath.

Tarpon here run to around two metres and take the bait with a lunge that soaks whoever is holding it. Pelicans have worked the arrangement out completely and stand at the rail for the misses. Behind them the marina bar keeps up its turnover of boat trips, beers and sunburn.

The Keys run on Eastern Time, UTC−5 and UTC−4 in summer. Feeding goes on through the day and peaks from late morning to mid-afternoon, when the tour boats are in. Winter is high season; late summer is hot, quiet, and your best chance of an empty rail.
