PortMiami handles more cruise passengers than any other port on Earth, and everything that leaves it has to pass through one narrow gap: Government Cut, the dredged channel between South Beach and Fisher Island. That bottleneck is what makes this camera work: ships do not slip away over a wide horizon here, they file past in full view, close enough to read the name on the bow.
Saturday is turnaround day and the reason to keep the tab open: terminals fill through the morning, then from late afternoon the giants leave one after another, Icon-class ships among them, the largest cruise ships ever built sail from these berths. Midweek the channel belongs to tugs, pilot boats, the odd container ship and the harbour's own working traffic.
Miami runs on Eastern time. Departures cluster between roughly 4 and 7 pm, heaviest at weekends, and the low sun behind the skyline makes that the best hour on this 24/7 live cam. The port never really stops, though: at night the terminals work under floodlights with downtown lit across the water.
