Duluth Ship Canal from Park Point
The Duluth Ship Canal and its lift bridge from Park Point, Lake Superior beyond, on a live webcam.
About this view
This live cam looks across the Duluth Ship Canal from the south side of the Aerial Lift Bridge, on Park Point, the sand spit that separates the harbour from Lake Superior. The camera belongs to a bed and breakfast on the point and has run since August 2024.
Ore carriers and salties pass through the canal at all hours, the lift bridge rises for them, and the beach in the foreground fills on warm days. The bridge began in 1905 as a transporter bridge, a gondola swinging across the canal, and was rebuilt as a lift bridge in 1930. Park Point itself runs some 11 kilometres out into the lake, one of the longest freshwater sand spits anywhere. Storms off the lake are the other show.
Duluth keeps Central Time, UTC−6, UTC−5 in summer. The port city of 87,000 is the last stop for seagoing ships on the Great Lakes, and the canal works from late March until ice closes it in January.
