Duluth Ship Canal Lighthouses
The two lighthouses at the mouth of the Duluth Ship Canal on a live webcam, Lake Superior storms included.
About this view
Two lighthouses mark the entrance to the Duluth Ship Canal, one at the end of each pier, and this live cam keeps them in view, zooming in on whatever the lake is doing, above all when a storm comes in. The South Breakwater Outer Light went up in 1901 and the North Pier Light in 1910.
Every ship bound for the harbour passes between them: lake freighters, ocean-going salties and the tugs that meet them, before the Aerial Lift Bridge rises behind to let them through. In autumn the gales off Lake Superior throw waves over both piers, and those storm days are when people keep this view open for hours.
Duluth keeps Central Time, UTC−6, UTC−5 in summer, so a morning arrival here lands in the European afternoon. The shipping season runs from late March until ice closes the canal in January, and in the depth of winter the piers and their lights are often sheathed in ice.
