Kamøyvær, North Cape
A fishing village on Magerøya, the island that ends at the North Cape — about as far north as Europe goes.
About this view
A live webcam from a sea-fishing camp at Kamøyvær, a village tucked into the head of Kamøyfjorden on the island of Magerøya — the island whose northern cliff is the North Cape. This is about as far up Europe as a road will take you: farther north than most of Alaska, with only the Barents Sea between here and the polar ice.
The waterfront is the frame: small boats going out after cod and halibut, the fjord changing colour with the weather, and the weather itself, which arrives from the Barents Sea without much notice. In season the boats come back with fish the length of a person.
The light does something different every month here (UTC+1, +2 in summer). From mid-May to the end of July the sun never sets; from late November to mid-January it never rises, and the aurora is the show instead.
