About this view
Kilpisjärvi is the last village in Finland's northwestern arm, at 69°N on the Norwegian border, under the flat-topped fell of Saana, 1,029 m. This live webcam faces north, the direction the aurora comes from, well inside the auroral oval where the aurora borealis shows on most clear nights of the season.
In frame: a dark horizon, the stars wheeling, and on a good night green arcs that thicken into curtains and flash pink at the edges. Snow from October doubles as a reflector, and the northern lights read brighter for it. The camera belongs to a local aurora photographer.
