About this view
The mountain across the bay is Esja, 914 metres of basalt that Reykjavík uses as its barometer, and this live camera looks at it from the city: the rooftops and the harbour front in the foreground, the water of Faxaflói, and the long wall of the mountain changing colour with every front that comes in off the Atlantic.
Esja carries snow from October to May and turns green for a few weeks in July; the clouds sit on its top as often as not, and the locals read tomorrow's weather off it. After dark in winter the mountain is where the aurora is looked for first, and on a clear night the lights stand over it while the city glows below.
