About this view
Forty-odd hills stacked around a bay on the Pacific, houses painted every colour, and the ascensores, the funicular lifts that have climbed the slopes since the 1880s: this live webcam looks over Valparaíso, the great port of Chile. The historic quarter has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003.
The bay below is a working harbour: container ships and the Chilean navy at the docks, the ferries and fishing boats of the caleta, and the container cranes lit through the night. Above it the hills change colour with the light, and the fog of the Pacific rolls in and burns off through the morning.
Chile keeps UTC−4, UTC−3 in the southern summer from September to April. The clearest views come in the afternoon after the morning fog, sunset over the ocean falls around 22:00 UTC in December, and New Year's Eve fills the bay with the largest fireworks in South America. Chileans call the city Valpo.
