Valparaíso, Chile's great Pacific port, is a city stacked up some 40 hills around a wide bay, its houses painted every colour and reached by the ascensores, funicular lifts from the 1880s, and the live webcams in Valparaíso take in what the hills see: the working harbour with its container cranes and navy ships, the caleta with its fishing boats, the stairways of the cerros, and the ocean beyond the breakwater.
