Kabukichō, Facing Hanazono-dōri
Kabukichō's neon from the south of the district, looking north to Hanazono-dōri, on a 24/7 live webcam.
About this view
The second unit of the Kabukichō live channel stands a few dozen metres in from Yasukuni-dōri on the south side of the district and looks north toward Hanazono-dōri, the reverse of the original angle, and this live camera runs it around the clock: the signs stacked to the rooftops, the touts and the tourists, the crowd thickening from dusk.
Kabukichō is Tokyo's largest entertainment district, a few blocks of izakaya, host clubs, karaoke towers and cinemas that never quite close. The street sounds come through with the picture: the melodies of the pedestrian signals, the train announcements, the hum of the video screens, which is why so many people leave it running at home.
Tokyo keeps Japan Standard Time, UTC+9, with no daylight saving, so the neon is at its best from about 10:00 UTC, a European lunchtime, and the last trains around 15:30 UTC empty the street for an hour before the all-night crowd takes over. The district is 歌舞伎町 in Japanese.
