Sainokawara Park, Kusatsu Onsen
Hot springs running as a river through Sainokawara Park in Kusatsu Onsen, Gunma, on a live webcam.
About this view
Sainokawara Park lies at the western end of Kusatsu Onsen, a few minutes' walk from the Yubatake through a street of souvenir shops and restaurants, and this live camera looks over it. Hot water wells up all over the park and runs through it as a stream, which is why it was once called Oni no Sensui, the demon's garden pond.
Kusatsu claims the largest natural flow of hot spring water in Japan, some 32,000 litres a minute, and the water is strongly acidic and hot enough to steam in the open air all year. At the top of the park lies one of the country's largest open-air baths. After dark the paths are lit, and people stroll them in yukata, the cotton robes the inns lend their guests.
Kusatsu keeps Japan Standard Time, UTC+9, with no daylight saving, so the evening lights come on during the European morning. The town sits at about 1,200 metres, so winter brings deep snow, and the steam rises thickest on the coldest days.
