Parks and gardens are the places a city keeps for doing nothing, and live park webcams show them at that: the great urban parks with their lawns, ponds and skaters, botanical gardens where something is always in flower, the national parks with their meadows, wildlife and waterfalls, and the small ones, a village green, a riverside garden, a playing field on a Sunday. The calendar is the whole show. Late March to May is blossom, cherry first, then magnolia, wisteria and the roses in June; summer is shade and picnics; October turns the maples and the ginkgos and is the busiest fortnight of the year for cameras and people alike; winter strips everything back to structure, and a snowfall on a formal garden is the sight of the year. Early morning has the joggers, the gardeners and the birds; the crowds arrive after lunch.
