Live Webcams in Kusatsu
Kusatsu is a hot spring town high in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, some 1,200 metres up on the flank of the Kusatsu-Shirane volcano, and the live webcams in Kusatsu (草津) look at a town built around its water. Kusatsu Onsen claims Japan's largest natural flow of hot spring water, some 32,000 litres a minute, strongly acidic and hot enough to steam in the open air all year. At the centre of town the Yubatake cools the water through a field of wooden channels before it is piped to the inns, and performers still stir it by hand with long wooden boards in the yumomi shows. Kusatsu keeps Japan Standard Time, UTC+9, with no daylight saving. Some 6,000 people live here; winter brings deep snow, and the autumn colour peaks in October.
