Sosei Square stands in Chuo-ku, the central ward of Sapporo, and this live cam looks over the city from it, with a music track and two figures in the corner of the picture: the current temperature and the depth of snow on the ground.
Those two numbers tell the year in Sapporo. They come from the Japan Meteorological Agency, the temperature refreshed every ten minutes and the snow depth every hour, and a normal winter drops several metres of snow on the city, among the heaviest falls of any large city anywhere. The square itself is a 2018 complex of offices and the city's arts theatre, and the TV Tower at the head of Odori Park stands a block to the south.
Sapporo keeps Japan Standard Time, UTC+9, all year. Its 1.96 million people make it Japan's biggest city north of the capital; the snow festival fills the central park in February, and the music track makes the view a background as much as a picture.
