Dorsoduro Canals
The quiet half of Venice: a Dorsoduro canal, its bridge and the gondolas working past.
About this view
Dorsoduro is the Venice that lives rather than queues: a long spine of hard ground on the south side of the Grand Canal, holding the university, the Accademia and the Guggenheim collection. This camera looks out from a hotel window onto one of its canals, a stone bridge and the palace fronts opposite.
Traffic is the whole show, and it is all boats. Delivery barges stacked with crates, water taxis, the odd gondola threading the bridge, and residents rowing standing up in the Venetian style. Foot traffic crosses the bridge above them; laundry hangs between the windows. Late in the day the light turns the water the colour of the walls.
Venice runs on Central European Time, UTC+1 and UTC+2 in summer. Mornings are for the deliveries, evenings for the aperitivo crowd heading toward Campo Santa Margherita. Come back in November and there is a decent chance of acqua alta, when the water reclaims the fondamenta for a few hours.
