From a rooftop at the eastern end, this 24/7 live stream looks west down the Bassin du Commerce: the footbridge, the water jets of Stéphane Thidet's Impact!, and the white curve of Le Volcan, Oscar Niemeyer's cultural centre, lined up in one frame.
The basin is older than everything around it: dug in 1791, it survived the bombing that flattened 82 percent of the city in September 1944, and its dimensions set the grid that Auguste Perret's team then drew the new centre on. The footbridge dates from 1969.
Evening is the moment: the jets and Le Volcan are lit, and the water does the rest (UTC+1, +2 in summer). The reconstructed centre around it has been UNESCO World Heritage since 2005.
