From the Hôtel de Ville of Brest, at the western tip of Brittany, this live webcam looks down on the Place de la Liberté. The square is the centre of a city rebuilt almost from nothing: Brest was more than 90 per cent destroyed in the Second World War, and the post-war plan laid it out again on a grid, with the city hall, inaugurated on 18 December 1961, at the head of the rue de Siam running down to the drawbridge at Recouvrance.
The square is where the city gathers: the tram crossing it, the markets and the Christmas village in December, concerts and demonstrations, the fountains and the skateboarders, and the Breton weather arriving off the Atlantic in bands, sun and squall within the same hour.
