Le Havre Port from the MuMa

Container ships and liners at the mouth of Le Havre's port, live from the roof of the MuMa museum.

About this view

The camera sits on the roof of the MuMa, the modern art museum planted at the harbour mouth, and looks straight out at the water. Around 60 percent of every container entering or leaving France passes through Le Havre, which makes this one of the busiest sightlines in the country.

Container ships, ferries and cruise liners come and go — the port logged over two hundred liner calls in 2024. It was in this outer harbour that Monet painted Impression, Sunrise in 1872, the canvas that accidentally named Impressionism; the MuMa below the camera holds France's second Impressionist collection after the Musée d'Orsay.

Spring tides swing the water by as much as 7.5 metres, among the largest ranges in continental Europe (UTC+1, +2 in summer). Mid-May to mid-September gives the clearest light.
